Gift of Freedom by IFoldBooks Gift of Freedom by IFoldBooks
There exists no truer freedom than the freedom of flight.

*checks watch* Well, its been quite a long time since I've posted anything. Can tell you guys are getting impatient, but I said I would come up with something "eventually" :XD:. Its been quite a busy month for me, and things are not looking to get any better. Seems like I will have to make the best use of one week's holiday.

I was toying around with a new technique/style or whatever you wish to call it. Painting with values first then colouring it. As a result, there's probably like 8+ more colour schemes I've done for this piece up my sleeve :D Trial and error and mistakes accounted for three-fourths of the time taken, but now that I've gotten the hang of some basics, it SHOULD theoretically allow me to churn out another piece in good time.

Oh, and I've begun on the next chapter, hope you would begrudge me a few more days :(.

By the way, suggestions and criticism is always welcome!

Thanks for the wonderful comment! :)

Clouds are probably one of my fortes for the fact that they're so abstract.

I'm glad you liked it :D I though it would be a boring picture if it was just clouds. After all, even clouds need a reason, right?

Beautiful! The colors are wonderful, and I really like your technique. The dragon almost blends into the sky too much, but I think you struck it just right. :)

I didn't want him to stick out too much, I liked the background more. So I made him crimson and added some blue :)

Thank you!

Nice work, it shows the joys of flying rather well. Keep on practising and maybe try your hand at more complex pieces? Oh, maybe a softer brush for painting clouds as well?

Thanks for the wonderful feedback as usual :D! Currently I'm more toying around with different styles and techniques to see which ones suit me best, the next will most likely be more complex than this! Thanks for the resource, but I've read it already :XD:

This is really cool. B-) I can see substantial growth from your last work. The contrast that is put into the lighting gives the picture a strong dramatic effect. Great job! :D

Thank you! The improved contrast can be attributed to painting with values first. It give better lighting effect, but I do not have as much control over colours as I'd like to. I think I'll settle for something between the two.

You're welcome. :)

I have tried starting with values, and I have noticed that the color always seems to dull the sharpness of the lighting. After layering on the color, I would have to go back and fix the light. Maybe I just still have a lot to learn (maybe?... make that definitely).

Either way, it definitely worked for you here. :D

Do you paint the colours on a new layer with the blending mode set to "colour"? Because I've made that mistake many times before I realized what was wrong :D

I used multiply on my one experiment, but I have not looked into what more seasoned artist use. I had just chosen multiply based on running through the options and choosing what seemed to work best for the most parts. Again, I still have lots to learn.

The multiply mode takes the colour's value into account, hence adding colours will result in darker lighting. The 'colour' mode does almost the same job as 'multiply' except it keeps all values.
